Why use these particular colours of crystals? It all begins with the 12 gemstones in the breastplate of Aaron created by Moses around 1400-1500BC in ancient Egypt, a sacred object that was worn by his brother Aaron, the high priest, in order to communicate with God, and later written about in the Bible's book of Exodus. Each birthstone is believed to have powers that derive from its astrological sign, bestowing the wearer with their talismanic and healing powers. It was only in the 17th century that people began to wear their own birthstone year-round, up until then the gemstone for each month was worn.
Because there were different interpretations of which gemstones were in the Breastplate of Aaron with variations of gemstones in the 'traditional' birthstone lists, in 1912 the American National Association of Jewelers compiled a' new 'modern' birthstone list, it's on this that the 1950s Swarovski birthstone list is based.
